  • Nokia says iPhone may boost pricier phones
By admin on May 15, 2007 | No Comments Comments

New YorkNEW YORK (Reuters) - Nokia Oyj hopes Apple Inc.’s highly anticipated iPhone will boost consumer appetite for pricier mobile phones with features such as music and video, Nokia’s Chief Financial Officer said on Monday.So-called smart phones allow users to surf the Web, take photos, enjoy music and video and sometimes games, in addition to making calls. Many are priced above $400, before subsidies by mobile carriers.

“The (U.S.) consumer … hasn’t had a lot of choice to go out and purchase these kind of higher-end, feature-rich multimedia devices. If that can help that market grow, I think that gives us an opportunity,” Nokia CFO Rick Simonson said at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit.

The iPhone is Apple’s biggest foray yet into the cutthroat $145 billion consumer electronics industry. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has set a goal of selling 1 million units in calendar 2008.

  • Nokia raises market share forecast, shares jump
By admin on May 15, 2007 | No Comments Comments

PARIS/HELSINKI — — Nokia [NOK-N], the world’s top mobile handset maker, lifted its market share outlook for the second quarter on Monday, saying it expected to have more than 36 per cent of the global cellphone market. The Finnish firm is benefiting from growing demand in emerging markets, like China and India, where it has a strong position.

Shares in Nokia were up 4.6 per cent at 19.26 euros at 1:19 p.m. GMT. It had earlier forecast that market share would remain at the 36 per cent level.

Nokia said in a statement it expected its phone shipments in April-June to be positively impacted as excess device inventory in the market — which held back its market share at the start of the year — had sufficiently cleared.

Nokia’s lead on the global market over closest rival Motorola [MOT-N]grew to its widest in years in the beginning of 2007 as the U.S. firm’s handset prices plunged when it tried to hold market share against competition from Nokia.

In case you’ve been wondering which Nokia clamshell device is right for you, Nokia N75 or N76, the following photos (found thanks to Darla Mack) may be somewhat helpful. Both Nokia N75 and N76 are powerful smartphones (”multimedia computers”) and run Symbian OS with S60 UI on top of it. Furthermore, both devices have very similar specs, with the only difference being in the size. RAZR fans will most probably go for the N76, but then again N75 will also find its buyers.
