Nokia phones to warn you of impending ThunderStorms !!!By admin on May 27, 2007 | No Comments

With many more cell phones coming in loaded with various applications to make your life easier here is another one of a phenomenon application.
Most of the people would have experienced the heavy audible interference in the TV or radio when a thunderstorms is approaching. Well, the science behind this is being used by Nokia to create a lightning detector device. The device being none other than the ubiquitous mobile phone.
The lightning strike disturbs a range of commercial frequencies (attributed to the EMI pulse) and Nokia intends to detect this interference in FM channel and warn users visually and/or audibly.
Nokia has applied for a patent for this invention back in late 2005. Since this does not require much hardware changes in new mobile phones to support this function we should see it in the market soon.

New Nokia Concept: Two screens, detachable keyboardBy admin on May 24, 2007 | No Comments

Nokia’s known for breaking out of the box from time to time, and their latest patent proves that. It describes a UMPC-like handheld with two touchscreens and a detachable keyboard. The keyboard can be slid on top of one of the screens should you need to text or browse the Web. Removing the keyboard would then let you use both screens as one display. It’s a pretty cool concept, though we’re still debating if it’s more UMPC than it is smartphone.

Alert!! First Trojan-SMS virus for S60 SmartphonesBy admin on May 22, 2007 | No Comments

The first Trojan SMS virus, designed for smartphones running Series 60 OS, has been spotted by Russian antivirus maker “Kaspersky Labs”. The virus is called Trojan-SMS.Symb.OS.Viver.
Viver is not a harmless concept study like recent Podloso Linux virus for iPod. If you get infected with this one, it can cost you some pretty money - after installation on your phone, Viver starts sending SMS messages to the premium SMS numbers, thus accruing charges to your mobile account and generating income for the virus author. While quite a few similar viruses were spotted for all JAVA running mobile phones, Viver is the first to be specifically designed for S60 based smartphones.
If you’re using a S60 phone from Nokia, watch out. Kaspersky Labs has just discovered the first trojan, Troja-SMS.Symb.OS.Viver, that will affect the S60 OS. If you mistakenly download this from the internet and install this on your phone—which is easy to do, since it’s mislabeled and disguised as a useful photo editor or video codec pack—the virus will start sending out SMS messages like nobody’s business.
