Nokia has seemingly taken a more direct route in offering two of its latest flip-style phones to U.S. consumers by selling them direct. The Nokia N-Series models — the N75 (also recently released on AT&T) and N76 — are now available via Nokia stores independent of a carrier contract.

The N75 (pictured at left) is a clamshell 3G smartphone that offers the Symbian operating system with the S60 interface in a small, flip form shape. It features a 2.4-inch, QVGA, color display and a 2 megapixel camera with integrated flash

The N76 is a Motorola RAZR-like model that has a similar flip form factor, and a heavy emphasis on music and multimedia. It also features photo and video capabilities with a 2.4 inch color display and a 2 megapixel camera with integrated flash, and an external display that allows for calling and other multimedia controls.

The suggested retail price for Nokia N75 is $430, and the N76 goes for $500 (without contracts).

Both devices are now available for purchase at online sites, including www.nseries.com, at the Nokia Flagship Stores in New York City and Chicago, and at independent retailers nationwide.

Nokia high-end multimedia smartphones are soaring in popularity. They’re helping to boost Nokia’s global dominance further, mobile sales figures from the first quarter of 2007 show.

The latest figures released by telecoms researcher Gartner show Nokia increasing its share of the worldwide mobile market to 35.7 per cent. That’s up from 33.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2006. Sales of its high-end multimedia mobiles drove this increase, Gartner reports. Some 8 million of Nokia’s 92 million phones sold in the period were multimedia smartphones.

Motorola maintained its second spot, although its market share slid back to 18.5 per cent from 20.3 per cent the year before. Samsung consolidated its third place with an unchanged 12.5 per cent share.

Sony Ericsson’s growing success with its Walkman and Cyber-shot ranges has seen its share increase to 8.4 per cent from 5.8 per cent a year previously. This has taken it up into fourth slot among mobile manufacturers.

Gartner’s first quarter mobile sales figures show a 14 per cent year-on-year increase in mobile sales. A total of 257.4 million mobile phones were sold during the quarter. Gartner reported strong demand from the Asia/Pacific region, particularly China and Japan.

Outdoors enthusiasts can now get detailed off-road ViewRanger mapping and navigation software for the NokiaN95 GPS-equipped smartphone.

ViewRanger GPS software is specifically designed for off-road users, such as hill walkers, mountain bikers, birdwatchers and ramblers. It provides high quality multi-scale mapping, using maps of Great Britain licensed from Ordnance Survey . Journey recording, performance monitoring and buddy location applications are also included in the software.

ViewRanger offers off-roaders a combination of 2D and 3D mapping, with a 3D Panoramic Viewpoint display that identifies features in the landscape. It has information logging software, and users can add their own waypoints, tracks and routes. It can also work with PC applications like Google Earth .

The ViewRanger package provides TripView journey logging and performance analysis software. ViewRanger also has a Beacon Buddy function that can transmit users’ location information to friends’ mobiles or PCs. It was only a few weeks ago when I was lamenting about the lack of smart syncing between the Nokia N95 phone and Mac desktop. Even though Nokia offers Nokia Music Manager, it is hardly a software you can recommend to people addicted to the iTunes’ easy music and photo syncing. It only syncs music, and it a bit difficult to work with, one of the reasons I have stopped using it after trying it out.

Nevertheless, a source of ours tells us that Nokia is about to release an upgrade to this software - the Nokia Media Manager - which will allow two-way syncing of not only music, but more importantly, photos. In other words, all the snaps you took on your Nokia N95 can now be simply synced with iPhoto. While I have not used the software so far, our source says it is a definite improvement over the previous version. The software, apparently will support most of the new N-Series phones.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Britain’s Carphone Warehouse has started sales of a black fashion phone model from the world’s top cell phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile , Research) which has not yet been unveiled by the Finnish company.

The mobile retailer’s Internet sales site on Monday advertised the Nokia 8600 — similar to Nokia’s strong-selling top-of-the-range 8800 — and said it will come with a 2 megapixel camera, music player and FM radio, in a stainless steel casing.

The Web site said it was an exclusive offer and that deliveries would start next week.
