  • Nokia opens flagship concept shop in Israel
By Bosxs on June 14, 2007 | No Comments Comments

2007 06 13 Nokia opened up their first flagship concept shop in Israel (today is the grand opening). It is over 150 square meters big and costed half a million dollars to build. It has a futuristic design with lots of glass and the space is divided into 4 sections: HEAR, SEE, DO, PLAY. This is certainly a good move since there are already tons of Nokia fans there in Israel. Maybe Sony Ericsson will also open up a flagship store there for the SE fans. Pics are from here and there is also a clip there.

  • Nokia vs. iPhone - The Real Problem
    By Bosxs on June 13, 2007 | 2 Comments2 Comments Comments

I really, truly hate mentioning the iPhone on this blog. I hate that I’m now just like everyone else talking about the iPhone. However, I also hate that I’m the only one (that I’ve read) that sees the true effects of the iPhone on the mobile phone industry.

Let’s get something straight right now. There is *NOTHING* revolutionary about the iPhone. At best, it’s evolutionary, and only because of the touch interface. However, the features and capabilities are NOTHING NEW. If you can’t agree with that, then stop reading here.

Let’s compare, for instance, the iPhone with the Nokia N91, which first went on sale over a year ago (both in the US and abroad)…..

Both devices have 2MP cam with no flash/autofocus. Both have WiFi. Both have EDGE (at least in the US). Both are available in 2 capacities, 4GB and 8GB. Both can sync with iTunes (assuming you’re not stupid enough to purchase DRM’d tracks from Apple and are just ripping them from the real CD). Both can browse the full internet.

I will make a few concessions. The N91 is fugly and lacks GSM 850 (this was before Nokia stopped being retarded with tri-band GSM devices). But there are several other S60 devices that are sexier and have all the right fequencies. S60 lacks the touch-interface, but I don’t think that’s as big of a factor as others seem to. However, the iPhone cannot do MMS, and you can’t add your own apps to extend functionality. You also, apparently, cannot swap the battery or the SIM card. So there’s the recap of the two products. Overall, they’re pretty much the same.
Now let’s look at pricing. The iPhone is $499 and $599 with a 2-year contract from AT&T and (presumably) a special data plan. The N91 is currently $394.99 for the 8GB, with the 4GB being cheaper than that! And that doesn’t require a contract at all! So what’s the deal? What are the SIGNIFICANT differences? Why is the iPhone so hotly anticipated, and S60 devices struggling in the US?

Promotion. Apple has marketed the iPhone like no other. The ads that came out the other day are sexy, and simple. The last Nokia ad that I recall seeing (other than on YouTube) is some hill-billy sitting on his bed “jamming” out to the Dukes of Hazzard polyphonic ringtone on his 6102. Where’s the mention of the sexiness of S60 devices and their capabilities?

Place - Where can you buy the N91? Online, and (I think) through the 2 Flagship stores in the US. TWO. That’s it, for the whole United States. Pathetic. Where will you be able to get the iPhone? Through any of thousands of AT&T retail stores, and the Apple Stores. Yes, Apple has a TREMENDOUS retail network in the US, and they’re still able to keep that “classy” feel.

  • Nokia N77 - Mobile TV smartphone turn-on
By Bosxs on June 11, 2007 | No Comments Comments

Live broadcast mobile TV is the key feature of Nokia’s latest N77 smartphone that’s shipping from today. The N77 is Nokia’s first regular candybar-shaped mobile featuring DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) TV technology.

It has a large display geared up for optimum TV viewing. The 3G-enabled Nokia N77 also has dedicated TV viewing controls, and a novel 30-second replay facility. This can be used while watching live TV programmes.

Up to 50 TV and radio stations can be stored on the N77’s DVB-H tuner. An electronic programme guide provides 7-day viewing information, and N77 users can set alerts for shows they don’t want to miss. Up to 5 hours’ battery life is claimed for live TV viewing.

The Nokia N77 is on sale now in Finland, where DVB-H mobile TV broadcast services are up and working. Nokia is also starting to ship the N77 in countries where DVB-H broadcast networks are currently operational. Vietnamese and Indian mobile users will be among the first tuning into TV on N77s later this month.

No DVB-H TV service is likely in the UK for the next couple of years at least, owing to regulatory and spectrum issues. So an official Nokia release in the UK is unlikely.

The N77 uses the familiar Nokia Symbian S60 smartphone platform. It has a 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) 16-million colour display, which is used sideways for TV viewing. It has a 2-megapixel camera and a secondary front facing camera for video calling. A multimedia player offers digital music and video playback too. Stereo Bluetooth and USB connectivity are also included.

  • Nokia N92 unboxing clip
By Bosxs on June 6, 2007 | No Comments Comments

I haven’t heard or seen many people with this phone. I certainly have not an unboxing video of this phone yet so this is an interesting clip. It’s a nice phone with a similar design to the N93/N93i but I find it a bit too big. Enjoy the clip.
